With the near simultaneous release of Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10, the world has been flooded with fast and powerful operating systems for all kinds of users. Both of them currently inhabit my system and they are both excellent options for business and personal use. Windows 7 corrects the direction Microsoft unwittingly took with Vista and Ubuntu 9.10 brings a whole list of improvements to an already solid core. With each release of any system, new relationships are formed and old ones are evolved.
There is no better way to describe my relationship with Ubuntu and Windows than to liken to a marriage. Ubuntu, being my long term love, has been with me through thick and thin. She has been with me through the better times of new Mesa drivers and faster boot times – as well as the worst of GRUB errors and wireless drivers. Every moment of pain has been shared with a moment joy. I remember the first time GRUB gave me an Error 13, it was like my daughter putting my Blackberry in the microwave the first time. You can imagine how that went. On the flip side, every time I enjoy a kernel update and all its improvements, it’s like my daughter being born – hours of labor and bug reporting end with a beautiful creation that deserves a fabulous $3 cigar. However, through each of these life tests – I never worry that she will leave me or lose my data or get stuck with a rootkit or otherwise betray me in anyway. Every moment we are together, she simply offers my unfettered love and loyalty. Even the beginning of the relationship was full of bliss with mostly automatic driver installs and an understandable menu system. It was as if she knew what I was thinking before I thought it – like soul mates.
Enter Windows 7 – Microsoft’s latest foray into the operating system fight. This article is not intended to display her similarities or differences from Window Vista but to show her as an evil temptress; that gal who is always nice to you and always seems to dress up nice every time bump into her. Windows 7 is extremely pretty and very much a step in the right direction from Windows Vista and Windows XP. From the overwhelming user base to the compatibility from one machine to the next, Windows 7 dangles many ease of use features that even the staunchest Linux user drifts an eye towards. Never would you need a sudo command, never would you worry the xorg will get corrupted and never will a user ask “what file format did you just send me?” Most items simply work with regards to standard users and standard functions. This is the temptation – its power rooted in Windows and her sultry ability to smooth everyday computing functions. Windows 7 struts in with curves of usability drawing your vision and whispers of software options filling your thoughts while you try to resist its charm.
It’s true that falling for Windows 7 is generally an easier path to take and will, for a smart user, give you many months of trouble free work. That’s where the charm stops. As with any temptress, life may seem simpler from inside the circle, but once you cross over, you quickly realize there are many dangers awaiting you. You will have the feeling of being vulnerable at all times while surfing the web, unless layer and layer of protection is put into use. You will run the risk of rootkits infecting every facet of your system unless you get tested repeatedly with anti spyware software. Most importantly, you will have nothing but a hollow relationship with your computer. Windows is an impervious shield between you and your hardware and nothing short of being a programmer will get you past it. Linux is entirely different in every way. Linux can give just about any user a harmonious relationship full of bonding and trust. The deeper you explore Linux, the more powerful an operator you become. A symbiosis is created that can create soul mates between the right distro and the right person. Ubuntu coddles a person life a spouse – always at the ready when you’ve had a bad day, always prepared to offer you its services if you have a task to accomplish and never unable to communicate. If Ubuntu is upset, you will always know exactly why and sometimes, she gives you a solution to her anger. Windows will certainly get upset, but like any temptress, you will be completely unaware as to why.
Needless to say, my heart belongs to Ubuntu, but I admit that I occasionally take a stroll with Windows 7. Linux is without a doubt a labor of love, but it’s the most rewarding relationship a user can create. There will be times of great frustration and anger and be prepared to be less then pleased at the simplest task. But rest assured that when it comes down to it and you are truly in need of a system by your side, Ubuntu will never let you down. Remember, that temptress in Windows 7 is fine to look at once in a while, but keep your thoughts where they belong – firmly in the loving arms of Ubuntu.

Wow, you speak all the thoughts I have related to Win7 and Ubuntu. At the moment I use only Ubuntu 9.10, but just a few weeks ago ended my Beta-running of Win7 and now cant wait till I got it on my PC.
The king of my PC will always be Ubuntu, i love it, i use only OpenSource, i am a Linux-Freak and the philosophy behind Ubuntu is also a great picture for me to follow.
Win7 is the bestlooking Win that ever saw the light of day. See, I am no newbie in the computing world, I started on 8/16-Bit-Systems, the first PC was Win3.1 running (a nightmare), than I had the Mac (I loved it, my kids are still owning Macbooks), then WinXP and since a few years Ubuntu. So looking back Win7 is really the best Win since ever.
My future will be Linux (Ubuntu, but I try other Distroś also from time to time), on Win7 i will use mostly Freeware/Shareware (I hate commercial monopolism). So let us be glad for the two best systems on the planet, for a goodlooking Win7 and a lovely, friendly, always growing Ubuntu !
