Running 3D DirectX Games Using Virtualbox And Wine3D

This post will help you to run some desired applications that wine doesn’t run under linux yet. Some games like those which uses x-trap anti-cheating software won’t run under wine, because they do kernel and other lower level app. checking.

So i’ve found a way to run it under a Virtualbox VM in some easily steps.

First, install Virtualbox from here. Make sure that you are not installing Virtualbox-OSE (Open Source Edition), present in Ubuntu default repository. Follow the instructions on the web page to install it. After installed, create a new virtual machine, and install Windows XP, then open it’s properties and check “Enable 3d Accel.” box. When it’s done, install Virtualbox Guest Add-on’s (can be found at the “Devices” menu, on your running virtual machine).

Now, reboot your VM, and then boot on safe mode with network support. Now, get the latest wine3D dll’s here. Check only the second and third boxes, because the first and the last one’s are still experimental, and it’s not implemented yet. Now reboot your VM and see the results. Take caution to do not install or overwrite your wine3D with Microsoft’s one.

Now you may be able to run DirectX9 games and apps!

Note: Directdraw and DirectX10 are experimental, so there is a big chance that these just don´t work this way.

Installing wine3D:

“The Duel” (a.k.a. Gunz) game running in Ubuntu:

Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.
“The Duel” Windows game running in my Ubuntu machine, low performance but playable

With this test i´ve been able to run a very solicited game for Linux “The Duel” (a.k.a. Gunz). It runs very slow at this moment, but looking in Virtualbox forums, i´ve found that this issue will be fixed soon. Other different games that i´ve tested this way, had perfect performance. Now, let´s wait for more news and see…

Please, help us to keep this free project updated and alive. THANKYOU!
