Eschalon: Book I released and published by Basilisk Games. A Turn-based RPG game available for Linux/Mac/Windows.
As a huge RPG fan I am very happy that a Company like Basilisk Games offer RPG games that are available for Linux users. Hats Off. This genre is one of the rare to find if you are looking for a good Turn-based games.
Eschalon: Book I comes as a 32-bit binary compressed in a .tar.gz package, but runs perfectly in a 64-bit environment. All that is needed is ia32-libs which you can find in Synaptic Package Manager, or by installing ubuntu-restricted-extras.
One of the negative thing I stumble upon is that Eschalon: Book I only support one resolution (800×600), which makes the game look poorly, especially on widescreen. Just a minor detail that doesn’t affect the gameplay at all, in my opinion. At least you have the option to run the game in “Windowed” mode. The graphic have a nice retro feeling that takes you back to the good old Ultima days, without being crappy.
As many other RPG you have to build your character by choosing; Race, Gender, Believes and Class. Thereafter Skills and Attribute, then you are ready for the adventure that lies ahead.
Eschalon: Book I offer a single character RPG, so if you are looking for team build RPG, you will not find it here. It does offer a nice single character RPG with a good story, but a bit short in my opinion. That do not make the game un-replayable. By choosing different Class and Skills the experience of the game have a quite of an impact. Though a pure spellcaster/Priest class a pretty weak compared to combo or pure fighter/Ranger, so try avoid that if you don’t like sleeping all the time to raise your mana.
The quests and dialog are well written, and the mood and feeling of the Eschalon will with no doubt drag you into its fantsy world. The feeling of this game is the same feeling you get in games like; “Monkey Island” and “Isha” which I think many games are failing or missing. The art of creating atmosphere.
The Sound and Music side is pleasant and without trying to dominating the game. Nice job.
Retro Game
Well written Quests
Atmosphere
Good Character Building System
Only support 800×600 Resolution
No 64-bit Support
Story a bit short
